Music ministry
About Music at St. Philip's
The ministry of music at St. Philip’s offers several opportunities for people of all ages to discover, develop and share their musical gifts. Many instrumentalists and singers who support strong congregational singing, provide music leadership in worship.
Young people and adults who are interested in being a part of this dynamic music ministry are invited to contact Ellen Diischer, Director of Music, or just come to any rehearsal, anytime, to “check it out.” You do not have to be a member of St. Philip’s to be a part of any of the following groups. All are welcome! Come and see!
SANCTUARY CHOIR
Adults and high school students who enjoy singing in a choral setting are invited to lend their voices to this group. The choir practices on Tuesday evenings throughout the school year, and leads worship at the 8:30, 9:45 and 11:00 Sunday worship services. The Sanctuary Choir also adds to the richness of festival worship services by singing anthems and leading congregational song. The most current rehearsal and singing schedule may be found on the music bulletin board. You are invited to come and sing.
CHILDREN’S CHOIRS
Children in preschool through grade 7 are welcome to join the Children’s Choirs of St. Philip’s. The Cherub Choir (preschool–grade 1) meets on Wednesdays 5:45-6:10. The Rejoice Singers (grades 2 &3) and the Believer’s Choir (grades 4-7) meet to practice at 5:15 on Wednesdays throughout the school year. The Rejoice Singers and Believer’s Choir sing for worship in September, October, November and December, and January, and then prepare for the presentation of a musical which is usually presented in April. Members of the Children’s Choirs are faithful and enthusiastic witnesses for Christ, and eagerly share their time and talents! The current choir information may be found on the music bulletin board. Come and become an M &M! (Minsters of Music!)
CHIME CHOIRS
There are currently two chime choirs that rehearse regularly at St. Philip’s: the Adult Chime Choir meets to practice on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm; the Youth Chime Choir (young people in grades 5-9) meets to practice at 6:20 pm. These groups provide music at various worship services throughout the year. There are also smaller groups of chimes that practice for specific anthems or songs or special services. No previous ringing experience is needed. Information and the current chime schedules are located on the music bulletin board. Come and ring!
SONG LEADERS AND CANTORS
Confident singers who are comfortable in leading liturgy are invited to become part of this unique group of musicians. Song leaders and cantors are needed to sing solo parts in various worship services. Soloists who are interested in auditioning for this ministry are invited to contact Director of Music, Ellen Diischer, for more information.
INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES
There are many opportunities for instrumentalists to play for worship services at St. Philip’s. Brass and string ensembles and various combinations of other winds and percussion are needed throughout the church year to accompany and lead choral and congregational singing. Instrumental solos and ensembles also provide special music during various worship services. Come and play!
